About Oni 鬼
Oni (鬼) are powerful creatures in Japanese folklore, often counted among the Yōkai. Their depictions vary, from spirits of the dead to savage, ogre-like fiends or malevolent demons. Tracing their origins to Indian Rakshasa, Oni are commonly shown as towering beings with sharp claws, wild hair, and one or two horns. Some legends also describe them with extra eyes or digits, while their skin color—often red, blue, or green—can vary. They typically wear tiger-skin loincloths and wield iron clubs (kanabō), inspiring the phrase oni ni kanabō (“an oni with an iron club”), signifying invincibility.
