Figures
Collection by Michael Wegerer, Austria
The starting point for the latest works in the Figures series is scalable images from the daily press and scanned newspaper pages. Various contents are transformed according to a numerical value system and, through the reworking of analog sources, take on a new visual form. The resulting visualizations have a strongly geometric character, although complex shapes can also be calculated using algorithms and extracted from the content of the respective newspaper page into geometric patterns.
Visual transformations significantly alter the original appearance, forming the first layer of painting. In the work, graphic processes are combined with painterly gestures, with the creation of a single piece sometimes taking several months. The themes and contents are layered and can be assigned to different time periods.
