Paweł Mendrek is an interdisciplinary visual artist, filmmaker, educator, and creative producer whose diverse practice spans drawing, photography, collage, publishing, collective actions, set design, and experimental film. Educated at institutions including the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, University of Applied Arts Vienna, Prague Film School, the Polish National Film School in Łódź, and as a scholarship recipient from the Academy of Art College in San Francisco, his work explores the image across multiple perceptual levels.
Currently, he serves as an Associate Professor of Experimental Film and Visual Narrative and Head of the Department of Intermedia and Set Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice. In these roles, he actively fosters international collaboration through the Parallax Network Group, contributing to innovative educational practices in film and visual art.
Mendrek's film work includes experimental shorts like Solaris (produced by KulturAXEwien) and the ongoing development of the feature project Home is Whenever I’m With You. He also acted as creative producer for the award-winning short film Never Ending Sound, which has been selected for numerous international festivals.
As a visual artist, his work has been exhibited internationally at venues such as the Museum of Applied Arts and Künstlerhaus in Vienna, the Museum of Art in Taiwan, Siena Art Institute, and galleries in Poland and San Francisco. 1 He has been nominated for several art awards, including the Strabag Art Award, and was recently shortlisted for the prestigious Kotarbiński Prize for his distinguished research publication On Care. 2 A Journey into the Relational Nature of Artists’ Residencies.
