Philip Carl de Jager

Tradition & Technik

Carl de Jager was born and raised in South Africa, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Art History. He has since lived extensively across multiple continents, making his home in the UK, Australian and now Spain. In 2015, he made a pivotal career change, leaving his position as a software developer in Melbourne to pursue classical drawing and painting at the prestigious Barcelona Academy of Art.

After graduating in 2018, de Jager transitioned into teaching at the same institution, where he currently serves as both an instructor and program coordinator. His teaching portfolio spans the full spectrum of artistic development, from foundational drawing to advanced painting techniques. He also leads specialised programs including the Light and Form and Portrait Courses.

Since 2024 Carl has collaborated with his good friend and fellow instructor at the Barcelona Academy, Kostas Protopapas, to create a series of workshops
He remains a practicing artist, with his personal artistic work deeply influenced by philosophy and psychology. His art also explores subjective life experiences, often employing symbolism and abstraction as tools to express feelings that elude verbal description. Through these artistic languages, he investigates, comprehends, and shares his unique worldview.
